There was a post in a group recently from someone who had “heard about” the Ethiopian eunuch and transgender people. While I’ve been highlighting books, I didn’t (yet) have a “list,” so here’s mine (for a more comprehensive list of related resources, see the bibliography of OtherWise Christian)!
Click through on the links for what I’ve written about each one.
Recent, Accessible:
OtherWise Christian: A Guidebook for Transgender Liberation by Mx Chris Paige
- Reviews 25 years of unapologetic transgender-affirming biblical scholarship!
- Group Discussion Guide
Transfigurations: Transgressing Gender in the Bible (DVD) by Peterson Toscano
- This DVD is a perfect resource before or after OtherWise Christian! Or maybe watch the performance version before you read OtherWise Christian and then watch the lecture version after you read OtherWise Christian.
- Study Guide
The Soul of the Stranger: Reading God and Torah from a Transgender Perspective by Joy Ladin
- I recommend this very accessible book about Jewish tradition as a follow-up to OtherWise Christian–especially for Christians!
- Study Guide from Transfaith
Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians by Austen Hartke
- Hartke offers a softer touch than OtherWise Christian, integrating personal stories. This may be the better starting point for some allies.
Recent, Academic:
Queering the Ethiopian Eunuch: Strategies of Ambiguity in Acts by Sean Burke
- A great resource in terms of eunuchs generally, as well as the Acts 8 traveler, specifically
Sex Difference in Christian Theology: Male, Female, and Intersex in the Image of God by Megan DeFranza
- In addition to the obvious, this includes important background on gender in the Western tradition (Greek, Roman, European)
Classic Texts:
TransTexts (2008), now hosted by Keshet
- Transgender rabbis help us look at what the classical Rabbinic tradition has to say about Genesis and Deuteronomy.
- Queerly Created
- Cross-dressing and Drag
Trans-Gender(ed): Theology, Ministry, and Communities of Faith (2003) by Justin Tanis
- For so many years, this has been the “go to” book for a comprehensive look at transgender theological concerns.
Omnigender: A Trans-Religious Approach (2001) by Virginia Mollenkott
- First book on transgender theological concerns from a major press!
Relevant Podcasts/YouTube Channels:
LGBT Bible Podcast with Shannon Kearns and Brian Murphy (Queer Theology)
Austen Hartke has done several relevant series on YouTube

Austen Hartke has an extensive list of recommendations from several angles.
