I actually wrote chapter 25 of OtherWise Christian: A Guidebook for Transgender Liberation as a riff off of Walking Towards Resurrection: A Transgender Passion Narrative (2015). Fr Shay’s e-book is probably the first, unapologetic works of transgender theology that I became aware of. That was ground-breaking and important for all of us to experience.

When I was creating the list of transgender Christian (auto) biographies, I remembered that we also have some oral histories. It’s actually super wonderful to be able to hear our people’s voices. As always, please let me know if you are aware of transgender Christians who may be lurking in other oral history archives!
In addition, I’ll want to make a list of documentaries, which are a little different. However, The Believers is one that I think should also be on an oral history list.

Austen Hartke is a transgender Christian who wrote the book, Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians (2018). But Hartke is actually a prolific member of the YouTube generation. Before the book, Austen made a name for himself with his “Transgender and Christian” series of videos on YouTube:

I believe that books are important, but our communities also need the opportunity to be in real-life community with folk who can tell their own stories.

Miss Major Griffin Gracy is a Black transgender woman and elder. She is a veteran of the Stonewall riots (which are credited with “kicking off” the modern “gay liberation” movement). Miss Major is a transgender icon, but perhaps an unlikely OtherWise Christian icon. However unlikely, she emerged as just such a figure in the final section of the final chapter of OtherWise Christian: A Guidebook for Transgender Liberation. Mx. Chris Paige (pronouns they/them) was the publisher of The Other Side magazine when they published the ground-breaking May/June 2001 issue on transgender concerns, featuring Chris together with Virginia Mollenkott and Erin Swenson.
In 1999, Chris launched a small Angelfire (free-hosting, like GeoCities) website called “TransFaith Online” which many years later evolved into an organization called Transfaith, which is a widely known resource for transgender people of diverse spiritual and energetic practices.
