Twin Oaks Queer Gathering (August 3, Virginia)

So this is kind of weird/awesome! Only my closest family knew that I would be on vacation with my family in Virginia in early August. I was thinking about reaching out to some folk in Virginia to see if I could drum up a book reading while I was already in the area, but I hadn’t gotten around to it yet… Continue reading “Twin Oaks Queer Gathering (August 3, Virginia)”

Sodom and Gomorrah, 2019

In OtherWise Christian: A Guidebook for Transgender Liberation, I stick to gender and don’t rehearse arguments about “homosexuality in the Bible.” Instead, I list a few trusted resources in Appendix A for folk who want to explore those aspects. Queer Theology is one of those trusted resources.

The idea that the story of Sodom and Gomorrah is about the “sin of homosexuality” is another great example of how we have been bamboozled by an anti-OtherWise empire.  If you’ve heard people use “sodomite” or “Sodom and Gomorrah” as a weapon, it can be quite liberating to go back to the biblical text to see what it actually says.

Online Book Launch with Dr Virginia Mollenkott

Thanks to the Rev Terri Stewart, we will be holding an online book launch for OtherWise Christian: A Guidebook for Transgender Liberation in collaboration with Methodist Manna: Online Worship for All.

Manna is an online worshiping community that welcomes, affirms, and centers queer / LGBTQIA+ voices in leadership and in practice, while working from a Wesleyan theological perspective. In addition to worship, Manna provides Bible study, spiritual support, and friendship.

I was already planning to have lunch with Dr. Virginia Mollenkott on August 1 when this invitation came. So I wondered if it might work to include her–and Dr Mollenkott agreed to host our online launch event from her apartment! We will chat online about OtherWise Christian and all that has happened since Omnigender.

The Soul of the Stranger: Reading God and Torah from a Transgender Perspective, 2018

In OtherWise Christian: A Guidebook for Liberation, I used so much content from Joy Ladin’s The Soul of the Stranger: Reading God and Torah from a Transgender Perspective that I asked her to read two of my chapters just to make sure I didn’t get anything wrong in representing her work!

Mx.

I was at a conference this week, so I met some people who had never seen “Mx” before. There are probably more of you out there, so here’s a little more background.

The options used to be “Mr,” “Miss,” and “Mrs,” unless you had a gender-neutral title or honorific such as “Bishop” or “Dr.” Somewhere along the way, women wanted an option that didn’t put their marital status on display. They started using “Ms” as a feminine-gender option which, like “Mr,” could be used regardless of marital status.

Call for Articles: OtherWise Christian 2

I’ve been at a conference this week. During a workshop, I mentioned OtherWise Christian 2: Stories from the Frontlines. Later that day, I was making OtherWise Christian: A Guidebook for Liberation available for sale (or discussion). Someone asked about buying the sequel!

First of all, I need to pay the credit card bill for the first book before I can launch the sequel. I want to be able to offer some compensation to authors. So please tell your friends and family! Talk with your local libraries and bookstores! Let’s get the first book to break even so I can create a financial plan for the follow-up!

That said, it was exciting to hear the interest! I am eager, too! The hardest thing about this phase is that even though people are buying the book, it’s too early to expect that very many people have read the book!

OtherWise Christian Library and Bookstore Campaign

So my dream for OtherWise Christian: A Guidebook for Transgender Liberation to be a resource to those who are most affected by and vulnerable to transphobia and trans-antagonism. That means making this book available in as many libraries and bookstores as possible so that anonymous seekers can find it.
