Donovan made a significant splash in the media when he came out as transgender as a professor at Asuza Pacific University, but he is actually (and has always been) intersex. His article in OtherWise Christian 2 demonstrates how much difficulty could be avoided by more education about intersex stories and experiences.

I am proud that we have 5 authors with intersex variations in this anthology– and will hopefully be compiling more stories in future volumes.

The Reverend Dr Donovan Ackley III is a sometimes professor of religious studies with more than three decades of experience in grassroots community organizing and nonviolent conflict resolution, most recently helping to launch the US-Canadian peer support suicide prevention line Trans Lifeline with and for transgender, non-binary, gender non-conforming, and intersex people. He has recently appeared in the documentary film “Intersex and Faith,” exploring the intersections of religion and gender.
