On Saturday morning, November 2, 2019, I am going to lead a one-session course for the Alternative Seminary, called Transgender Liberation: Intersectional Identities, Alternate Genders, and the Biblical Testimony of Eunuchs.

I will be teaching from OtherWise Christian: A Guidebook for Transgender Liberation, with a particular emphasis on Section 4: Eunuchs, Eunuchs, and More Eunuchs. Yes, if you haven’t figured it out yet, I’ll be talking about eunuchs!

This is a wonderful sort of reconnecting with community as the Alternative Seminary was started by folk I knew from The Other Side magazine. I actually taught a one-session course on “Development of the New Testament Canon” which must have been back in the late 1990s! Here is a bit more about the Alternative Seminary:

Since 1993, various groups of Christians in the Philadelphia area have gathered for in-depth biblical study, blending serious scholarly work with personal experience and a concern for the connections between the biblical story and our contemporary society. Our study has been influenced by liberation theology and seeks to model new forms of biblical and theological study and a new vision of what it means to be the church in our culture. Transgender Liberation: Intersectional Identities, Alternate Genders, and the Biblical Testimony of Eunuchs

Mx Chris Paige (formerly publisher of The Other Side magazine) will present from their new book, OtherWise Christian: A Guidebook for Transgender Liberation. Drawing on 25 years of transgender-affirming scholarship, Chris will invite us to expand our understanding of the 50 explicit uses of the word “eunuch” in the Christian Bible (many of which are obscured in translation), as well as other likely or perhaps eunuchs such as Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. In doing so, we will challenge one another to live more deeply into resistance from colonized gender ideology, white supremacy, and Christian empire.
